The Good Dinosaur had the unfortunate luck of having to come out after the other Pixar movie, Inside Out, which still remains one of my favorites of 2015. When comparing the two, The Good Dinosaur is surprisingly underwhelming. The story feels very reminiscent of Finding Nemo, except that neither Arlo nor Spot are that interesting of characters.

The stumble-prone Arlo regularly falls and thumps his head or body against large rocks. While characters compare scars, a T. rex “cowboy” tells a Wild West-style story of facing off with a group of crocodiles and watching one drown in a pool of blood. As a prank, Arlo’s brother pretends he’s dead.
Spot and Arlo don’t just go on a journey to get back home, they also go on a personal journey where they learn to trust in each other, and learn a lot about who they are in the process. The animation in The Good Dinosaur is stunningly beautiful. Photo-realistic, even. And yet, the story is so basic, so immature, and so disjointed that the visuals are in service of a dud of a plot.

The Pixar Ball. The Pixar Ball, as you can imagine, is yet another one of Pixar's biggest Easter eggs. Like the Pizza Planet truck, it too appears in every single Pixar film, including The Good Dinosaur. Just because a film tackles "harsh" realities does not make it an interesting or enjoyable film. If the entire film had been 2 hours of dinosaurs eating each other, that would be quite gruesome, but hardly a good film. The problem is that the harsh realities are not well connected to the plot. The plot is very basic, Arlo gets lost and has to find his way home and encounters several other characters on the way, some good, some bad.
